Collagen protein is a protein with a fiber-like structure which is used in connective tissues that form a fundamental element of bone, skin, muscles, tendons and cartilage. Comprising almost three quarters of your skin, collagen makes up for almost a third of the protein in the human body.
For the most part collagen protein consists of the amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. These amino acids from three strands that together create its characteristic triple-helix structure. It’s important to note that this composition also differs from sets of amino acids from your typical plant-based proteins.
As people age, their existing collagen breaks down and it gets harder for the body to produce more. Collagen supplements can help keep skin elasticity maintained and joints healthy. However, the type of protein is also commonly found in animal based food products like eggs, (red) meat and fish.
